British-born Ernie Taylor, an International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness professional, was one of the top Mr Olympia bodybuilders in the 1990s. One of his most famous quotes emphasises the fact that training and diet go hand-in-hand to build a great physique. While a lot of people train hard to build muscle, they don’t eat enough to gain the physique that they could attain with the correct diet.

The Austrian-born seven-times Mr Olympia and former Mr Universe, who went on to become a top Hollywood actor and later governor of California, is one of the most famous bodybuilders of all time. There’s even an annual competition, the Arnold Classic, as testament to his massive influence on bodybuilding. His quote sums up his own tough climb to the top and emphasises the importance of aspiring to achieve more.

Robert Cheeke, a 37-year-old American bodybuilder, is unusual in his sport because he’s a vegan. He grew up on a farm and learned to respect the animals, which led to him cutting meat and all animal-based foods from his diet. He is living proof that a meat-free diet isn’t detrimental to bodybuilding and his quote describes his own achievements after others scoffed at him and said he couldn’t succeed.

Former IFBB professional bodybuilder Haney won the Mr Olympia title a record eight times. The Oregon-born bodybuilder is a born-again Christian, who promotes spiritual as well as physical growth. His quote advises athletes not to take in more calories than they’re going to burn off. He has criticised the increase in obesity in the US and says exercise is the best way to combat it, urging kids to get involved in recreational sports.

The IFBB professional bodybuilder, who is now 52, took part in more than 30 bodybuilding contests and reached the top five in 29 of them. He reached the Mr Olympia top five 12 years running, has featured in fitness documentaries and is a published author. He takes nutrition very seriously and his quote stresses that however hard you train, you’re holding yourself back if you don’t consume the correct nutrition.
